You don't need a lift and a toolbox the size of a wardrobe to take good care of your car. These seven driveway jobs need basic tools, under an hour combined, and save you hundreds a year. And yes — we'll happily show you how any of them work at your next visit.
1. Check tire pressure monthly
Use the door-sticker number, check cold, and don't forget the spare. Proper pressure is worth 2–3% in fuel and even tire wear.
2. Top off washer fluid
The one fluid everyone can do. Keep a jug in the garage; running dry burns out the pump.
3. Replace wiper blades
Streaking? New blades clip on in minutes — most cars need no tools at all. Replace yearly, before the rainy season.
4. Check oil level between changes
Park level, wait five minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe, re-dip. Between the marks is fine; below the lower mark, add the spec oil and tell us at your next visit.
5. Swap the cabin air filter
Usually behind the glovebox, usually tool-free. If your vents smell musty, this is suspect number one.
6. Test every light quarterly
Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards. A burnt brake bulb is a safety issue and a traffic stop waiting to happen.
7. Wash the underbody in winter
Salt is a slow-motion wrecking ball. Monthly underbody rinses in salt season add years to brake lines and subframes.
