1. The sniff test
Musty air from the vents usually means a moldy cabin filter or evaporator — a $35 filter swap, not a new A/C. Sweet syrup smells mean coolant, and that's a same-week visit. Rotten eggs point at the catalytic converter. Your nose is a legitimate diagnostic tool; trust it.
2. The cold-start listen
Start the car with the radio off once a week. Squeals on startup suggest a belt; ticking that fades is often lifters; grinding that doesn't fade is brakes. Record a 10-second video — it helps us enormously when you book.
3. The light inventory
Red lights mean stop driving and call. Yellow lights mean schedule this week. The one everyone ignores — TPMS — costs you tire life and fuel every single day it stays on.
4. The puddle check
Clear water under the A/C drain is normal. Everything else deserves a look: black or brown is oil, red or pink is transmission or coolant, green or orange is coolant. Snap a photo of the color and location.
5. The tire story
Uneven wear is your suspension and alignment writing you a letter. Check pressures monthly against the door sticker — not the tire sidewall — and look for cracking on tires older than six years.
